Pared To Truth

Theological reflections of a melancholy Eastern European pilgrim…

Charlie Kirk. A Martyr?

I’ve been calling out some of the same things for a long while. Charlie Kirk’s horrific murder and its aftermath have only brought them into clearer view. There’s a lot of truth in what this man below (reel link) is saying, and I’m glad he’s a fellow evangelical and not a political opponent who is blowing the whistle.

I also know it’s sensitive to speak negatively about a man who was just murdered — and murdered horribly — but this posthumous elevation to martyrdom we’ve been witnessing borders on idolatry. And that makes it difficult for some to sit idly by and not react. Besides, this critique is aimed less at Charlie himself and more at the willful blindness of the broader evangelical circles in our country, or the lack of balance and discernment on display. And if we are going to be elevating what Charlie was engaged in as Christian ministry, a work for the Kingdom of Christ, we ought to be ready to face the uncomfortable truth of what that really means.

With all respect for his grieving family, doctrinally speaking, Charlie Kirk was a babe in Christ at best — and that’s speaking charitably. I say ‘charitably’ because some of his views were so twisted they had no biblical grounding at all.

You see, in our day it is not enough merely to articulate the Gospel to be regarded as sound in the Lord. It is all the add-ons that reveal one’s true passions and trajectory. For Charlie, the overwhelming weight of his platform was in galvanizing political change. This could not be clearer to anyone who spent even a little time listening to him. He was foremost a political zealot.

So if you must call him a saint or a martyr, you should at least try to be honest and call him a martyr for the Republican cause and for that party’s vision of America. Painful as it may be to hear, I cannot think of a clearer example of someone so utterly entangled in the affairs of this world — namely, the politics and the Christian Nationalist movement he championed. And being entangled is exactly what we are warned — indeed, commanded — not to be. When the name itself confesses it (entanglement), should it not be plain enough to us as Christians?

As for his memorial service… it was anything but a humble affair. A pageantry of partisan Americana, draped in Christian robes. And even beyond the memorial, some churches went so far as to use AI to play videos of him ‘speaking’ from heaven — really profane theater.

But we shall see whether my assessment is harsh or accurate. Soon enough it will be revealed how much of his work was built with “gold, silver, precious stones”—or with “wood, hay, and straw”—for the Day will declare it. And we know as well that judgment begins at the house of God.

Still… I shudder to think where this Christian Nationalist agenda is leading our nation. I want no part of it.

One response to “Charlie Kirk. A Martyr?”

  1. I agree with most of what you say. I’ve been watching his rise to sainthood with bemused disbelief. Are people that lacking in ‘real’ saints and ‘real’ martyrs to elevate this dude to the ranks of saint? it’s the language that gets me, the idea that he was assassinated. you only assassinate famous. you shoot everyone else.
